The Emperor Penguin issue was part of the Royal Australian Mint's early 1990s wildlife piedfort program — a format borrowed from European minting tradition in which a coin is struck on a blank twice the standard thickness, requiring significantly higher die pressure and producing sharper relief at the cost of slower output. Australia had only recently warmed to the piedfort concept for collector issues, and the 1992 series represented one of the earliest sustained commitments to the format by the RAM.
KM#P4 designations for Australian piedforts from this period reflect genuinely low production runs, as the RAM did not publish official mintage figures consistently for piedfort strikes until later in the decade.
