The ECU — European Currency Unit — was a basket currency used as an accounting unit within the European Monetary System from 1979 until it was superseded by the euro in 1999. It never existed as circulating coinage for European citizens. Liberia's Central Bank exploited the ECU's nostalgic appeal after its discontinuation, issuing a string of "10 Dollars ECU" collector pieces nominally denominated in both Liberian dollars and the defunct unit — a monetarily meaningless hybrid aimed squarely at the souvenir market.
The Spain piece is one of several in the series, each tied to an EU member state. None were legal tender in the countries depicted.
