The golden arowana (*Scleropages formosus*) has been listed under CITES Appendix I since 1975, making international trade in wild specimens illegal. Captive-bred fish, however, can sell for tens of thousands of dollars apiece in Asian luxury markets, where the species is considered an omen of wealth. Palau has issued a number of fish-themed bullion and collector pieces aimed squarely at that same market.
KM#833 is part of a broader "Dragonfish" series. The two-troy-ounce format is consistent with Palau's collector-oriented silver issues of the period, which prioritized premium presentation over circulation.
