| 正面描述 | The full arms of Jamaica occupy the central field, featuring a quartered shield charged with five pineapples on each quarter, supported on the dexter by a female Taino figure holding a basket of fruit and on the sinister by a male Taino figure bearing a spear and feathered headdress. A crocodile passant surmounts the helm and mantling as crest. A scroll below bears the national motto OUT OF MANY, ONE PEOPLE. The legend JAMAICA arcs along the upper periphery, while TEN DOLLARS and the date 1989 are inscribed along the lower field. |

Part of a broader commemorative program anticipating the 1992 quincentenary of Columbus's first landfall, Jamaica began issuing New World Discovery coins years ahead of the anniversary — positioning itself among the earliest Caribbean issuers to stake a claim on the occasion. The Bank of Jamaica's timing was deliberate; by 1989 the numismatic market for Columbus-themed issues was already crowded, and early entry mattered commercially.
KM#140a designates the silver proof variant, distinguished from the base-metal circulation strike by composition alone.
