Additional information

Jamaica's 1992 commemorative program marked the quincentennial of Columbus's 1492 landfall, an anniversary that generated enormous controversy across the Caribbean. Many island nations declined to frame the event as a "discovery" at all, given the Taíno and Arawak populations who had inhabited the region for centuries before European contact. Jamaica issued the coin regardless, adopting the traditional Eurocentric framing that several of its neighbors explicitly rejected.

KM#152 was struck at the Royal Mint.
