The 1992 date places this squarely within the quincentennial commemoration of Columbus's 1492 landfall, widely believed to have occurred at San Salvador — an island within the Bahamas archipelago itself. The Bahamian government had particular cause to mark the occasion: the islands are among the most credible candidates for Columbus's first recorded landfall in the western hemisphere, making this a rare case where a commemorative issuer has genuine geographic standing in the event being commemorated.
