Additional information

John Paul II died on April 2, 2005, and within months a flood of commemorative issues from minor issuing authorities saturated the market. Liberia, which has no meaningful connection to the pontificate, was among the most prolific producers of such pieces — the country's mint program during this period was effectively a licensing operation run through foreign distributors, with Liberian sovereignty lending legal tender status to coins designed, struck, and sold entirely outside Africa.

KM#739.1 suggests a sub-variety designation, implying at least one parallel version exists within the same type.
