The Marshall Islands began issuing novelty collector coinage in the late 1980s after gaining independence in 1986, exploiting its mint authority to generate revenue through commemorative programs aimed almost entirely at foreign collectors. None of these pieces circulated domestically in any meaningful sense. The Ford Model A — the nameplate revived from 1927 to 1931 after Henry Ford finally killed the Model T — sold over four million units in its short run, briefly saving the company from collapse before the Depression ended consumer appetite for new cars.
