Eritrea declared independence from Ethiopia in 1993 after a 30-year war — one of the longest independence struggles in African history — and the Bank of Eritrea moved quickly to assert a distinct national identity through coinage. This silver issue appeared just a year after formal independence, part of an early collector series that preceded any practical silver coinage infrastructure in the country.
The cheetah population in Eritrea, once ranging across the Horn of Africa, had been severely fragmented by decades of conflict and habitat disruption tied directly to that same independence war.
