Niue has operated as a prolific licensing partner for themed bullion since the early 2010s, leveraging its status as a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand to issue legal tender coinage with face values that bear no relationship to circulation reality. The Last Jedi, released in December 2017, was the highest-grossing film of that year globally — making it commercially logical, if years delayed, as a bullion subject.
