Reverse description Full-length standing figure of Richard I of England (Richard the Lionheart), depicted in medieval royal attire including a crown, crusader surcoat bearing a cross, and a flowing cloak. He holds a broadsword point-down in his right hand and rests his left hand upon a large heater shield charged with the three golden lions passant guardant of the Royal Arms of England. In the background to the left, a scene of mounted Crusader knights advancing before a medieval castle with a Crusader banner is engraved in fine detail. A crowned circular mintmaster's cartouche with the initials EW appears in the upper centre of the field. The dates 1157 – 1199 are inscribed in the upper field, and the name RICHARD THE LIONHEART appears within a decorative ribbon scroll along the lower exergue. The border replicates the interlaced knotwork ornamental band of the obverse.
