Niue has operated as a licensing vehicle for commemorative coin programs since the 1990s, issuing silver pieces under arrangements that funnel royalty revenue to the island's government while the coins themselves are designed, marketed, and distributed almost entirely from abroad. This Disney series is a product of that model. The Lady and the Tramp film it commemorates was released in 1955 as Disney's fifteenth animated feature, produced on a relatively modest budget after the more expensive package films of the late 1940s nearly bankrupted the studio.
