This is a licensed Star Wars release issued under Niue's long-running arrangement with the New Zealand Reserve Bank, which grants Niue the right to produce legal tender coinage despite the island's population sitting below 2,000. The program has run since the early 2000s and funds a meaningful share of the island's revenue — the coins are collectibles by design, never intended for a cash register.

The Death Star issues in this series have appeared across multiple weights and finishes; the 300g strikes occupy the upper tier of the product line and typically carry mintages in the low hundreds.
