The Cologne Cathedral took over 600 years to complete — construction began in 1248, stalled for centuries with the unfinished south tower famously serving as a crane storage depot, and wasn't finished until 1880. At that point it briefly held the title of tallest structure in the world before the Washington Monument surpassed it two years later.
