New Zealand's great spotted kiwi — Apteryx haastii — is the largest of the three kiwi species and among the most range-restricted, confined largely to the upper South Island's mountainous terrain. It was not formally described until 1872, when Julius von Haast collected specimens from the Southern Alps.
Charles III's first portrait on New Zealand coinage follows the rightward-facing effigy by Martin Jennings, adopted across Commonwealth issues from 2023 onward after the death of Elizabeth II in September 2022.
