Struck to mark the May 2023 coronation of Charles III, this is among the first New Zealand gold issues to carry his portrait — the country had not produced a royal coronation gold piece since the Elizabeth II issues of 1953. The Reserve Bank contracted the Perth Mint for production, as has been standard for New Zealand's premium bullion and proof programs since domestic striking capacity was wound down decades ago.
At 62.2 g of .9999 fine gold, this is a two-troy-ounce piece — a format that commands a steeper premium over spot than the one-ounce equivalent but draws collector interest precisely because mintages at this weight are almost always tightly capped.
