Liberia has a long history of issuing commemorative coins for the international collector market rather than domestic circulation, and this piece falls squarely into that tradition. The subject — Nicolae Ceaușescu, Romania's dictator from 1965 until his execution on Christmas Day 1989 — is an unusual choice for a Liberian issuer, reflecting the anything-goes nature of that country's commemorative program in the early 2000s.
Ceaușescu's regime collapsed with exceptional speed: from his final public speech on December 21 to the firing squad on December 25, just four days elapsed.
