Jamaica's shift toward large-denomination circulating commemoratives in the early 1980s reflected the country's deepening foreign exchange crisis — the Jamaican dollar had lost roughly half its value against the USD between 1982 and 1984 alone. The ten-dollar face value on a coin of this size and weight was already being outpaced by inflation before the year was out.
The Atlantic blue marlin was chosen partly for its association with Jamaica's sport fishing industry, which the Seaga government was actively promoting to attract foreign tourism revenue. KM#114 was struck in copper-nickel rather than the silver used for collector versions of similar issues.
