Issued to mark the 30th anniversary of ASEAN, this coin arrived at a historically awkward moment: the Thai baht collapsed in July 1997, triggering the Asian financial crisis that would devastate several of the bloc's founding members within months of this commemorative's release. Singapore itself weathered the crisis better than most, but the irony of a celebratory regional unity coin minted at the precise onset of the region's worst modern economic convulsion is not lost on serious collectors.
