The 1977 ASEAN commemorative marks the tenth anniversary of the association's founding in Bangkok on August 8, 1967 — a grouping that at the time included only five members: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore itself. The .500 fine silver specification was a deliberate economy; Singapore had issued its earlier commemoratives in higher-purity silver, but rising bullion prices in the mid-1970s pushed the Monetary Authority toward this debased alloy without sacrificing the coin's collectible positioning.
