Nauru's practice of licensing its name to commemorative coin programs — primarily through European distributors — produced dozens of issues in the early 2000s bearing faces of world leaders. This piece appeared while Merkel was still CDU opposition leader, roughly a year before her election as Chancellor in November 2005, which makes the timing either prescient or coincidental depending on which production records you trust.
