The 2007 issue falls within the "Preamble to the Constitution" reverse series, which the Mint ran from 2006 through 2008 — each year pairing a different constitutional concept with the one-tenth ounce denomination. Congress authorized the American Platinum Eagle program in 1996 under the American Eagle Bullion Coins Act, making it the only platinum bullion coin carrying legal tender status issued by the U.S. federal government. Platinum Eagles consistently trade well above face value, rendering the $10 denomination essentially ceremonial from day one of the program's existence.
