| Obverse description | Close-up frontal effigy of the Statue of Liberty, her diademed and torch-crowned head filling the field, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair and robes. The radiant spikes of her crown extend toward the upper rim, framing the legend LIBERTY arching across the top. The date 2004 appears to the right of the effigy alongside the motto IN GOD WE TRUST in three lines, while E PLURIBUS UNUM curves along the lower left rim. The engraver's initials JM are visible at the lower left of the portrait. The design was executed by John M. Mercanti in a bold, sculptural style characteristic of the American Platinum Eagle series. |
