Additional information

Alice Paul led the militant wing of the American suffrage movement, organizing the 1913 Washington parade that was attacked by crowds while police stood idle — an event that arguably did more for the cause than a decade of conventional lobbying. She later drafted the Equal Rights Amendment in 1923, a text that was still being debated in state legislatures nearly a century after her death.

This piece is part of the First Spouse Gold Bullion series, issued to accompany the Presidential Dollar program. Because William Howard Taft's wife Eleanor died before him, Paul — who never held the First Spouse role at all — was paired with the 2012 Taft dollar as a stand-in representing women's suffrage of the period.
