Liberia's early 1990s collector series leaned heavily on international celebrity subjects with no connection to the country whatsoever — a practice common among smaller nations using numismatic exports as a foreign currency revenue stream. Prost had just retired from Formula One at the end of 1991 after his fourth world championship, making the timing of this issue transparently opportunistic.
The coins were struck by foreign contract minters and sold almost exclusively to overseas collectors. Virtually none circulated.
