Liberia's commemorative program of the early 2000s produced dozens of foreign-portrait coins with little connection to Liberian history, sold almost entirely to the collector market through third-party distributors. Lincoln's inclusion is commercially motivated rather than historically grounded — though Liberia's founding by the American Colonization Society in 1822 does create a tenuous American thread through its national story.
