The Abaco parrot (Amazona leucocephala bahamensis) nests almost exclusively in the limestone solution holes of Great Abaco's pine forests — an unusual ground-nesting behavior that made the population acutely vulnerable when Hurricane Dorian struck the island in September 2019, killing an estimated 70,000 people's worth of habitat and devastating colonies that conservationists had spent decades rebuilding. This coin's 2021 release date places it squarely in the post-Dorian recovery period, and the subject choice was almost certainly deliberate.
