The Marshall Islands began issuing commemorative coinage in the late 1980s through a licensing arrangement that outsourced production entirely — these pieces were never intended for circulation and functioned primarily as collector revenue instruments for a nation with no domestic mint. The A6M Reisen series reflects a broader wave of Pacific theater aviation commemoratives issued around the 50th anniversary of World War II.
The A6M, designed by Jiro Horikoshi, entered service in 1940 and outclassed every Allied fighter it encountered in the Pacific's early engagements. Its range was achieved partly by eliminating the pilot's armor plating entirely.
