The Solomon Islands Monetary Authority was the short-lived transitional body that issued currency between British colonial administration and the establishment of the Central Bank of Solomon Islands in 1983. This 1977 note belongs to the authority's first issue series, released just one year after the islands achieved self-governance and two years before full independence in 1978 — which means these notes were circulating during a period when the constitutional status of the territory was still being formally negotiated.
De La Rue's watermark security on this issue is straightforward by the printer's standards. The relative brevity of the Monetary Authority's operational period keeps surviving circulated examples of this first series moderately scarce.
