Trinidad and Tobago declared a republic on August 1, 1976, severing its remaining constitutional ties to the Crown after fourteen years as an independent nation within the Commonwealth. This 1981 issue marks the fifth anniversary of that transition. The proof striking was handled under contract, as the Central Bank lacked domestic minting capacity — the Franklin Mint in Pennsylvania produced a significant portion of the Caribbean commemorative coinage of this period, including issues for Trinidad and Tobago.
