Kiribati gained independence from Britain on 12 July 1979, separating from the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony after the Ellice Islands had already broken away to form Tuvalu in 1975. The fifth anniversary issue in 1984 came at a moment when the new nation was still negotiating its economic footing — heavily dependent on British aid and phosphate revenues from Banaba that were, by then, nearly exhausted after decades of intensive mining.
