This note belongs to the Ship Series, Singapore's third definitive series, introduced progressively from 1984. Thomas De La Rue handled printing throughout the series, a relationship Singapore had maintained since its earliest post-separation currency. The Monetary Authority of Singapore took over issuance from the Board of Commissioners of Currency in 2002, but in 1988 the MAS was acting as issuer while the BCCS technically retained the currency function — an administrative distinction that occasionally causes cataloging confusion with this series.

Watermark security was the primary anti-counterfeiting measure at this denomination level; the series predates the wider adoption of security threads in Singapore's paper issues.
