The Royal Bank of Canada's 1913 series was printed by the American Bank Note Company at its Ottawa facility — one of the few ABNC operations outside the United States, established partly to satisfy Canadian regulatory preference for domestic printing. The bank had only recently consolidated its position as a national institution following its 1901 expansion beyond Quebec, and the 1913 notes reflect that ambition in their production quality.
Charter bank notes in Canada remained legal tender alongside Dominion of Canada government issues until the Bank of Canada Act of 1934 effectively ended chartered bank currency. Most surviving commercial examples from this period show heavy circulation wear — five-dollar denominations turned over constantly in trade.
