The Bank of Ottawa was one of the smaller chartered banks operating under Canada's pre-Confederation banking framework — still functioning as a regional institution when this note was issued, before its 1919 absorption into the Bank of Nova Scotia. The American Bank Note Company printed for dozens of Canadian chartered banks during this period, and the Ottawa plant handled this work locally rather than routing it through New York.
David MacLaren served as General Manager of the Bank of Ottawa from 1874 until his death in 1908, making his signature on this note one of the final years of his tenure.
