The Bank of Montreal was the oldest chartered bank in Canada when this note was issued, and its relationship with the American Bank Note Company in New York was long-standing — ABNC produced much of the bank's nineteenth-century paper, a common arrangement given that no Canadian security printer of comparable quality existed domestically at the time.
The 1891 series predates the wave of Canadian bank failures and consolidations that would reshape the country's private banking system over the following two decades. Notes from solvent chartered banks of this period remained redeemable and occasionally circulated well past their nominal issue date.
