Obverse description The obverse features the Fijian national coat of arms at centre, flanked by two Fijian warriors as supporters, each holding a traditional weapon. The shield is quartered, displaying a British lion passant in the chief, sugar cane, a coconut palm, a dove of peace, and a British lion holding a cocoa pod. A sailing vessel appears as the crest above the shield, and a scroll banner below bears the national motto in Fijian. The legend FIJI arcs along the upper rim, with the date 1980 positioned in the lower field. A decorative serrated border frames the entire design.

Additional information

Fiji gained independence from Britain in October 1970, making this 1980 issue a straightforward decade commemoration. The Reserve Bank had struck a similar silver piece for independence itself, establishing a pattern of commemorative releases that would define Fijian numismatic output through the 1980s. KM#46a designates the sterling silver variant, distinguished from the copper-nickel circulation strike KM#46 issued alongside it.
