Disney Dollars were a genuine private scrip, legal tender within Disney parks and resorts, first introduced in 1987. The 1994 series was produced by the American Bank Note Company, the same firm behind countless government-issue currencies — a deliberate choice that gave the notes a convincing hand-feel and ink depth that set them apart from ordinary gift certificates or promotional paper.
They were redeemable at face value in US dollars until Disney quietly discontinued the entire program in May 2016, with no advance warning and a 30-day redemption window.
