Andorra's lunar series of the 1990s was produced under the authority of the Episcopal Co-Princes — the Bishop of Urgell and the President of France — a medieval dual-sovereignty arrangement that has governed the territory since 1278. The series targeted the collector market almost exclusively; Andorra had no independent monetary history of its own until the 1980s, when it began issuing commemorative coinage despite using French francs and Spanish pesetas for everyday commerce.
