The bust is rendered in a stylised, medieval portrait manner, with the date 1492 inscribed on a tablet at the base of the truncation, commemorating the year of Columbus's voyage. The legend ISABEL I appears vertically along the left field, while the fineness and weight inscription 1/10 OZ. 999.9 AU is positioned vertically to the right. The mint year 1997 is inscribed in large numerals along the lower rim.
