Andorra's coinage history is an oddity — the principality had no official legal tender of its own until 2014, when it adopted the euro. These silver issues from the early 1990s existed in a semi-official limbo, produced under episcopal authority and marketed almost entirely to collectors rather than circulated. Joan Martí i Alanis served as Bishop of Urgell from 1971 to 2003, a tenure that made him co-prince of Andorra for over three decades.
The 1994 World Cup was hosted jointly across nine American cities — Andorra issued several denominations around this theme, this being among the heavier silver strikes in that run.
