Andorra had no formal mint of its own in 1986 and contracted production of its commemorative coinage to the Monnaie de Paris. The XIII World Cup was held in Mexico that year — the second time Mexico hosted, standing in after Colombia withdrew citing economic difficulties. Andorra issued several denominations for the tournament, this being among the smaller silver pieces in the set.
Joan Martí i Alanis served as Bishop of Urgell from 1971 to 2003, making him one of the longer-serving co-princes in Andorran history.
