Andorra issued this coin to mark the 40th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, which in 1957 established the European Economic Community among its six founding members. Andorra itself was not a signatory — the microstate spent decades in a peculiar limbo, conducting trade informally through France and Spain without formal treaty status with the EEC or its successors until a customs union agreement was finally reached in 1990.
Bishop Joan Martí i Alanis, the Episcopal Co-Prince from 1971 to 2003, authorized much of Andorra's commemorative silver program during this period as the principality quietly built diplomatic relationships it had historically avoided.
