Additional information

Joan Martí i Alanis served as Bishop of Urgell — and therefore co-Prince of Andorra — from 1971 until his death in 2009, making him one of the longest-serving holders of that feudal office since the 1278 Paréage established joint French and episcopal sovereignty over the territory. This coin was issued under his authority as co-Prince, a constitutional arrangement that remains in force today and gives the sitting bishop genuine, if largely ceremonial, sovereign standing.

The Slaughter of the Innocents subject places this piece within Andorra's late-1990s program of biblically themed commemoratives, several of which referenced early Christian iconographic traditions tied to the Pyrenean ecclesiastical heritage of the Urgell diocese.
