Additional information

Andorra's sovereign coinage program, launched in the 1980s under the co-princeship framework shared between the French Republic and the Bishop of Urgell, was built largely on the collector market rather than circulation demand. Joan Martí i Alanis, who served as Bishop of Urgell from 1971 to 2003, held one of the two co-princely roles and authorized these issues in that ecclesiastical capacity — an arrangement with roots in a treaty dating to 1278.

The red fox series belongs to a run of Andorran wildlife-themed silver issues with consistently low mintages targeted at European numismatic subscribers through the 1990s.
