Andorra's coinage authority during this period operated under the ecclesiastical sanction of the Bishop of Urgell, one of two co-princes sharing sovereignty over the principality alongside the French head of state — an arrangement dating to a 1278 pareage that remained constitutionally intact until Andorra's first formal written constitution was adopted in 1993, just one year after this coin was struck. The series featuring native Pyrenean fauna was part of a deliberate push into the collector market during the late 1980s and early 1990s, when Andorra was aggressively expanding its numismatic program to generate revenue.
