Andorra's coinage authority operated under an unusual dual sovereignty arrangement — the Bishop of Urgell and the French head of state served as co-princes — and ecclesiastical themes dominated the country's commemorative silver output throughout the 1990s. Joan Martí i Alanis held the bishopric of Urgell from 1971 to 2003, making him one of the longer-serving co-princes in the modern era and the ecclesiastical authority under whose name this piece was issued.
The series to which KM#158 belongs was struck at a moment when Andorra was rapidly expanding its numismatic program ahead of potential eurozone integration, which eventually rendered the country's independent coinage largely ceremonial.
