Andorra's coinage authority operated under the co-princeship of the Bishop of Urgell and the French head of state, and Joan Martí i Alanis held the episcopal seat from 1971 to 2003 — making him one of the longest-serving co-princes in modern Andorran history. His name appears on a substantial run of commemorative silver issues produced through the 1990s, largely targeting the collector market rather than circulation.
The 1992 quincentenary of Columbus's first voyage generated commemorative coinage across dozens of mints worldwide, and Andorra issued several related pieces across 1992–1994 under this series. KM#98 belongs to that extended release window.
