10 Diners - Joan Martí i Alanis Customs Union

Andorra lacked any formal coinage of its own until 1982, operating for centuries under a barter economy and circulating whatever French and Spanish currency drifted across the border. The 10 Diners series issued under Bishop Joan Martí i Alanis — one of Andorra's two co-princes, alongside the French President — funded the principality's application process toward formal customs arrangements with the European Community, a relationship finally codified in a 1990 agreement that gave Andorra duty-free status for industrial goods while keeping it outside the EC proper.

KM#99 belongs to a run of commemorative silver issues that constitute essentially the entire numismatic output of the principality during this decade.
