Andorra's coinage authority rests with its two co-princes — the Bishop of Urgell and the President of France — a feudal arrangement dating to a 1278 paréage that has never been formally dissolved. Joan Martí i Alanis served as Bishop of Urgell from 1971 to 2003, making him one of the longest-tenured co-princes in the modern era. The Charlemagne theme connects directly to the legendary grant said to underpin Andorran autonomy, though historians treat the 805 charter as largely mythologized.
KM#121 is part of a broader commemorative program Andorra ran through the 1990s targeting the collector market, as the principality mints no circulating coinage of its own.
