Andorra applied for United Nations membership in 1993 and was admitted on July 28 of that year as the 184th member state — remarkably late for a recognized European nation, a consequence of its unusual co-principality structure, which complicated questions of sovereignty and legal standing for decades. The coin commemorates that admission under Joan Martí i Alanis, the Bishop of Urgell and one of Andorra's two co-princes alongside the French President.
The bishopric of Urgell has held co-sovereign authority over Andorra since a paréage agreement of 1278.
